Take Preventative Steps
One of the biggest issues when machine washing polyester is pilling. The fibers in polyester can catch and pull, leading to unsightly pilling. To avoid this, turn your clothing inside out before putting it in the washer. Also, do up any zippers, so they don't get tangled or flap about inside the machine. Zippers, in particular, can catch on the polyester and tear the fibers. If you are washing a bag or anything with pockets, shake it out to make sure any used tissues or general debris is removed.

Select Your Machine Setting
A cold or warm wash is the best setting for polyester. The last thing you need for polyester is too hot a wash. If your machine has a permanent press option or a synthetics setting, make sure to select it. Both will give a slower spin option and prevent wrinkling. If you don't have a permanent press, check your machine for a no-spin option and remove the excess water by hand. Wrapping in a towel and rolling carefully is a safe way to remove excess water.

Use The Right Detergent
When it comes to polyester, stick with a standard detergent. One that doesn't have a built-in fabric softener or tough stain removal, and anti-wrinkle formulas. The reason for this, all the extra useful features of modern-day detergents can be harsh on polyester fibers causing the fabric to pill or even lose color. Go for a simple, tried, and tested detergent that promises to wash delicate synthetics.

Check The Temperature
Before you drop your polyester shirt or dress into the washer: Give the label one last glance. Double-check the temperature you need to wash it. Make sure the washing machine setting is at or below the recommended one on your garment label.

Choose What to Wash With Polyester
Most of us will only run a washer when there is at least half a load waiting in the basket. This may be a bit of a problem if you're short on polyester items. You can wash polyester with other fabrics. It's colorfast, so it won't bleed out on anything as long as it's not washed too hot.

Drying Time
Polyester dries best if it's allowed to air dry. If you want to machine dry, make sure it is on the lowest setting possible for the shortest amount of time. Over-drying, polyester can cause shrinkage, pilling, and color loss. Drying at too hot a temperature can cause the fabric to melt.

Producing Fibre
All fabrics are made up of fibers that are arranged in various ways to create preferred texture, durability, and appearance. There are different fiber types, namely:

Plant Fibers
Plant fibers are typically derived from hemp, bamboo, linen, or cotton. They consist of extracted cellulosic materials that can be used for yarn production. Since the cultivation of cotton is mainly resource-intensive, it is by far the most commonly used plant fiber.

Animal Fibers
Silk and wool are the commonly used animal fibers that consist of protein. Wool can be derived from several kinds of animals, and to make animals grow faster and produce higher yields of wool, insecticides, and pesticides are used to avoid disease. Dipping is a kind of practice to control parasites in sheep farming, making use of both synthetic pyrethroid and organic phosphates. Once the wool fibers have been sheared, they are chemically treated during the washing and scouring process.

Man-made Fibers
Man-made fibers like rayons are based on cellulosic raw materials that are normally seen from wood pulp. They are treated with several hazardous substances before the new thread is spun.

Synthetic Fibers
Synthetic fibers are made from monomers found in fossil oil feedstocks, which are polymerized into different fibers afterward. Polyester is the most common synthetic fiber, followed by polyamide, polyacrylic, and aramid.

Yarn Making
Once the fiber has been produced, the next step is to spin the fibers into a yarn. This step is a mechanical one since there is no chemical involved. However, to further increase the fiber's strength, and cohesion, and reduce its friction from the spinning method, spinning oils are provided.

Manufacturing of Fabric
The heart of a textile factory is fabric production. A particular fabric can be created in many different ways. In manufacturing knitting fabrics, sizing chemicals and lubricants are added to strengthen and reduce friction.

Pre-treatment of Fabrics
The pre-treatment processes can be done in fiber production, yarn production, or in manufacturing knitted fabrics. These processes enable and prepare the material to accept dyes and other functional chemicals, which are executed in a multi-step process.

• Washing. General cleaning of the fabric following previous steps and treatments.
• Scouring. Removes fatty waxes and greases from natural fibers, cottonseed, and husk.
• Bleaching. A dyeing process that makes the fibers whiter and more absorbent.
• Mercerizing. Makes cellulosic fibers swell and become more durable and lustrous. Also, it makes the fabric have a greater capacity to accept the dye.
• Carbonizing. Removes vegetable residues, like sea pods from the wool.

Dyeing and Printing Method
As mentioned earlier, chemical treatments like dyeing can take place in several steps in textile processing. Dyes used for dyeing can also be utilized for printing. However, the fabric must undergo the same fixation and washing processes after the dyeing method. Both the dyeing and printing methods use dangerous chemicals. A general way to print fabric is to use pigment prints- where the pigments stick to a fabric surface through a binder or polymeric resin. For garment printing, plastisol printing is commonly used. Digital printing is a different and another method. Other printing techniques discharge and resist print using chemicals and dyes.

Finishing Treatments
The last step is all about adding technical properties or aesthetic appeal to the finished fabric. Different chemicals are used depending on the unique features desired, like flame resistance, water resistance, antibacterial treatment, protective coatings, and more. When the knitted fabric material has the desired features, colors, and design, it is made into finished products such as sportswear, loungewear, undergarments, and more.
